Team 2198 (Paradigm Shift) is L'Amoreaux CI's VEX and FRC Robotics Team

The team domain was, but I'm not sure if it's maintained. We had an Adobe Muse site in 2014, followed by Wordpress in 2015-2018 when I left.

This was a static site I hoped to replicate on Wordpress but never had time to. Enjoy.

Paradigm Shift is the FIRST and Vex Robotics team from L’Amoreaux Collegiate Institute. Since 2007, our rookie year, the team has participated in several international robotics competitions. Team 2198 consists of over 30 grade 9-12 students. Guided by their mentors, students learn many skills. Students develop skills in design, fabrication, programming, electronics and web design. In addition, the team is dedicated to enhancing leadership, teamwork and business skills in all its members. Skill development occurs through the process of fundraising as well as planning, building, testing and competing with a fully developed robot.

Paradigm Shift is the FIRST and Vex Robotics team from L’Amoreaux Collegiate Institute. Since 2005, our rookie year, the team has participated in over 16 competitions at the global level. With over 30 members, the team is dedicated to enhancing the skills of leadership, teamwork and business in all its members through the process of planning and developing a competitive robot.

We support the FIRST mission to spread STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. The team assists other schools through mentoring as well as sharing resources. For instance, Paradigm Shift promotes robotics through information sessions and robot demonstrations to our feeder middle school, Sir Ernest Macmillan Public School. Through the help of our future sponsors, we intend to extend our assistance to more TDSB schools.


Every year, we attend several competitions for each of the main robotics compatitions: VEX and FRC. VEX is a much smaller robotics contest, with the robots being limited to 18x18x18 inches. FRC on the other hand is a much larger scale comptition, taking up multiple gymnasiums for the playing field.

In the VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test on the playing field as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels; local champions go on to compete against the best in the world at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April!

Last month our team, Paradigm Shift, entered 2 teams in the Vex Robotics game, In The Zone (see game video above). We competed in the Toronto VRC qualifying event, the largest of its kind in Canada, and both of our robots made it into thes elimination quarter final matces.

Last year, team 2198X competed in the provincials, and almost made into the elimination matches. This year we are hoping to improve and go to the world competition for both Vex and FIRST.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is a unique sporting event that challenges the mind. The purpose behind the competition is to help high school students discover the interests and rewards of engineering and science. The rules are as follows: Each year in January, a new game is announced. The challenges change each year, but the rules and guidelines do not. Students are tasked with building a robot in six weeks, using the budget and resources available, while still complying with the specifications of the game.

However, FIRST is not just about engineering. Students learn about business principles including: marketing, fundraising, business plans, presentation skills and management. Most importantly, FIRST builds people by awakening their inner talents and helping them learn new skills.

We support a diverse and inclusive learning environment that allows students to develop their own passion and contribute to the team given their own strengths and skills. Gracious professionalism founded on the concept and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals compete with high intensity, yet are helpful, respectful and kind to their competitors. They are always willing to go the extra mile to assist others with their know-how and resources. This is the spirit of FIRST.
